Packing Tips: Best Journey Shoes

I have tried and tested a variety of travel shoes over the last few years and have some stand out favorites. Nowadays, I alternate out the same brand of shoes as they wear down and often never even pick another color. Here are the best travel shoes to take on your next big trip!

My Fave’s: Best Journey Shoes

Tom’s

I love my . I have taken them all over the world and they haven’t failed me yet although after four years I’m starting to see a small hole (and my dog ate the insoles, so I had replaced them). These match everything but if you can get two pairs, they also make fun tribal patterns or classic canvas ones. These are the best travel shoes!

Chaco’s

I take my strappy on all my adventure trips. they are great for hiking in hot areas or when you’ll be hiking across rivers or creeks. They are perfect for white-water rafting as well or just general walking (like the pic below in Bangkok) as they really mold to your feet. There are so many varieties and I have the double strap. I think I might go for the single strap next time and get a brighter color! If you look back to my first blog posts you’ll see these shoes – I’ve been traveling with the same pair for 4 years.

Sol Sana

I am in love with my  sandals. I got them just before my trip to Jordan and have taken them on every trip since and wear them nearly every day. They are a very nice leather so I don’t wear them when I’ll be near water – but I do wear them even in adventurous areas like my Wadi Rum tour. They are nice though, so I wear them for nights out and wandering through cities in the day, among other times. They’re great with dresses or jean shorts! I have the first pictured ‘Tali’, but all of them are comfortable. I wore them for a photoshoot I did for my friend Tia’s clothes so I’ll share a couple of those pics!

Reef

You’ve got to have a good pair of flip flops for the beach. I have a variety of Reef shoes- even sneakers! But their simple is almost always in my luggage unless I am going somewhere a little fancy like my recent trip to Singapore when I would pack only my black Sol Sana sandals.

Black ankle boots

Everywhere I go that is even remotely cold my come along- in fact, I wear them out in Goa nearly every night that I go out partying even though it’s like 80 degrees here in December in the day! They are cute and make every outfit look better. I don’t think I could travel somewhere like Europe without them and I definitely wouldn’t go anywhere cold without them. I took them all over India, most recently to NE India on my Holiday Scout tour. Now I want the brown pair but after two years they still aren’t on sale haha!

A Fun Pair!

I rarely take a “fun pair”. The times I do are road trips since you can take more luggage, quick beach trips since I’ll be taking less for them (and smaller clothing like beach clothing takes up less space than winter clothing), or when I am going away for a very long time like a couple months in Europe and want something fun – I pack mostly sun dresses on long trips so always have a lot of luggage space.

I wrote all about my favorite “fun” shoes on my Etsy post which is where all the below pictured are from!

    Rachel,
I do love my Tom’s. I have two pairs with me. But it is definitely a regret that I did not bring more varied types of shoes with me for this long haul in India. I have sandals and tennis-shoes. I might go back to the States for a visit in November (I do love Thanksgiving). If I go I will have to bring more shoes back with me.
    Thanks for the tips!

I almost bought a second pair of Toms while I was in the US b/c I want a colorful pair but it just seemed excessive since i have SO many other shoes here in India so I’m going to wait until mine die completely then replace them with more Toms :)

I’m traveling with the brown pair of the Lucky Brand boots right now! I’m obsessed with them – they really go with everything.

Allison I’m so jealous!!! I want the brown pair lol, did you get the light brown or dark? I couldn’t even decide. I almost bought them then realized they wouldn’t match my black leather jacket I always wear, or my black purse… so then I’d have to buy a brown jacket.. so I looked at Wilson leather (the only shop around) and couldn’t find one… alas, it wasn’t meant to be lol

I think this article is extremely important and helpful thank you in advance. I don’t own a pair of Tom’s shoes so I dont know what I am missing but I have been very tempted to buying a pair. I do own several Reef sandals and are very comfortable as well as my Birkenstock sandals which are also great and pretty much go with everything.

I’ve been thinking about getting birkenstocks, I love the love. I’d want tan though and my Tom’s are tan so I don’t “need” them is the problem :/ Maybe next year!

I really like your tan Tom’s not a common color. You’ll love the feel on the Birkenstocks, I highly recommend them, excellent comfort. Personally, I wonder why they aren’t on your blog I have more Birkenstocks than I have purses, can’t get enough. You’ll thank me next year

I also love my TOM’s but the problem is that the soles wear very quickly. I’ve always wanted a pair of Chaco’s so I’m glad you recommended them too. Instead of Reef flip flops I prefer Rainbows. Also, great call on the ankle boots, great for stylish travel and a night out on the town!

My boyfriend is all about the rainbows. My Tom’s haven’t worn down yet actually and I’ve had them for about 4 years! The burlap is starting to wear though.

Great recommendations! As someone whose feet always hurt from wearing crappy sandals, I will be checking out some of your links. I especially like that the shoes seem to last so long without showing major wear and tear… definitely a must for my future travel!

Hi Marissa, yes I’ve had some of these for so many years. Love them. I almost want my Tom’s to die so I can pick a new pair haha

I love all these ideas! I have a pair of the Lucky Brand booties too and I absolutely love them. also- Toms offers sandals now and I am a fan of them for travel! they have some cute designs and they have good soles.

You know I was looking at the Tom’s sandals and wondering if they would be any good – so thanks for that advice!

  7. […] I take smaller ones, not big clunky ones. They go with dresses instead of looking like work out shoes. I actually didn’t take them to India, but I’m adding them to this list because I know some people like to run. I don’t know why as running is the worst. You can read my post on my favorite shoes for travel here.  […]

I love your shoe choices but what do you do about a workout shoe for long walks, hikes, jogs.. whenever I skip the athletic shoe.. I regret it.

    • Rachel Jones February 25, 2018 at 6:33 am - Reply

For tourist walking around and short hikes, the Tom’s – on a casual trip .. but if I’m going somewhere intense where I know I’ll be doing a lot of adventure I would take a tennis shoe/boot whatever I need for that. I don’t go on jogs! haha
