DIY Lemon Sugar Scrub

Like I said in a post last week, I’m going to start sharing on here what writing I get up to outside Werkenntwen. I’ve done two interviews, one with Grown Up Gap Year about my decision to leave the U.S. as well as a “what to pack” interview with Dirty Paws Blog. Since I was getting all materialistic over on her website I thought I’d post my recipe for a face scrub! Although primarily a travel blog, Werkenntwen is all about being yourself while you travel, and for me that means keeping my girly side alive despite Ben’s attempts to turn me into a dirty hippie.

So, onto the DIY Lemon Sugar Scrub!

I gave into Pinterest and finally completed a project. I had pinned at least 5 DIY lemon sugar scrubs on my boards and never actually got around to it. In india, it’s often over 100 degrees often and very dry. I’m on a bike a lot so the dirt is also thrown up on me and ends up caked on my face. I don’t know if being in the ocean helps or hurts, but I figured it was time to give into the DIY lemon sugar scrub.

I looked at a few recipes and ended up mashing them together to make my own. You can use this on your face or body. I put it on my feet and elbows too! It’s about 3,000 rupees (60 bucks) at my favorite spa in Goa for a facial, so this is a nice way to save a little money too.

DIY Lemon Sugar Scrub Recipe

1/2 juice of one lemon

1 tbsp olive oil

1 tbsp organic honey

1/2 cup of sugar

Directions: First squeeze out the lemon and pick out all the seeds. I left all the pulp in. Then add the olive oil and honey. Last, add the sugar- you can add more because this is just the exfoliator. I ended up putting in about 3/4 a cup because I had a pretty huge lemon. I don’t have anything to measure here so these are all kind of guesses, but seriously you can’t really mess this up.

The sugar will take off all the dead skin and dirt. The lemon will tight your skin and shrink your pores. Olive oil is great for UV protection and cell regeneration (it has vitamin E).

Put it on your face in gentle circular motions and then leave it on for 5-10 minutes. I can never last 10 minutes. First I get an itch on my nose, then I itch it.. then it itches on my forehead.. then my hands are covered in a sticky mess. Anyways, after I wash it off with warm water, I wash my face with normal face wash because you can still feel the oil a little bit. I store mine in a tupperware in the fridge because it’s so hot here, but it depends on where you live.

That’s all! Now my face is as smooth as a baby’s bottom! I am about to lay out and add a nice tan on top of my new face, but if you’re one of my friends in the polar vortex, this smooth skin is a perfect time to put on your fake tanning lotion.

Now, I’m going to attempt to make my own Bumble & Bumble sea spray because I can’t get it here! :(

No prob! I’m trying to find other recipes that I can make similar to products I used at home, but with ingredients I can get easily in Indian markets.

Love this kind of thing! Just yesterday I was thinking about how much I would like a scrub. Nothing makes you feel more fresh and clean. Also, no shame in sharing this kind of thing even on a “travel” blog. It’s all part of being a girl and a traveller. Getting your pores clogged up with dirt and pollution? Uh hell no.. :)

Yeah and I was thinking even while on the go, you can get your morning tea and just keep the lemon and sugar packet and do a make-shift scrub back in the room!

Not really my thing, but strangely enjoyed the freshness of this post. Might just give it a try, in privacy, without telling anyone else:)

Haha it’s the lemon photos that got you- they look so good!

Great recipe. Recently, I have been a big fan of healthy and natural cosmetics so the lemon sugar scrub sounds like a plan to me. I would also chop some cucumbers and put some slices on top of my face and eyes.

This is great. Just this morning I was thinking my skin was needing a bit of TLC but trying to cut down on the amount of beauty products I’m buying! I can literally make this from items I already have in the kitchen – love it!

Glad you love it! I’m trying more DIY ones to save from lugging beauty items from home over to India. I’m attempting to make homemade bumble and bumble surf spray next. That’ll save me 50 bucks!

LOVE sugar scrubs. I made a batch over the holidays with coconut oil, sugar, peppermint extract, and vanilla extract. Holy awesome. I’ll be trying your recipe next- this is one DIY beauty thing I can actually handle!

That one sounds amazing! I doubt I can get peppermint extract here or I’d try it out!
